OCBC Bank data centre named Malaysia's first facility to be awarded the highest-level Iridium plus tier for sustainability-linked efforts

OCBC Bank (Malaysia) Berhad (OCBC Bank) Data Centre in Cyberjaya is the first facility in the country to be awarded the Iridium Plus Tier under the Certified Green Computing Facility certification by the Green Climate Initiative (GCI) - the highest tier currently available.

The OCBC Cyberjaya Data Centre leveraged AI to improve energy efficiency and achieved this distinguished certification level for its sustainability-related efforts, setting a new benchmark for sustainable data centre operations in the region.

GCI, a leading green technology accreditation and certification body serving Asia and the Middle East, has been certifying and endorsing organisations and professionals in green technologies since 2008.

Speaking on behalf of GCI, its CEO and Accreditation Board Chairman Mr Matthew Rajendra said OCBC Bank has once again proved its mettle by achieving another great milestone.

“Our heartiest congratulations to OCBC Bank for its keen foresight and earnest dedication to sustainability at its data centre in Cyberjaya. While climate change is one constant area to focus on, we applaud the Bank for being able to set a mark for others to emulate especially in their quest of leveraging on AI capabilities for better efficiency.

“Despite the thorough audit process, and the weighted scorecard criteria upgraded to reflect the current realities of the data centre industry better, OCBC Malaysia still managed to score 98 out of 100 points. The minimum requirement for Iridium Plus tier is 98 points along with a PUE metric of less than 1.40, where OCBC achieved a PUE of 1.33. This is indeed no mean feat,” he said.

OCBC Bank’s data centre excelled in areas including structured green data centre policies, e-waste management, mechanical and electrical engineering, renewable energy, artificial intelligence and personnel technical capabilities.

According to OCBC Bank Chief Operating Officer Ms Chong Lee Ying, the Bank is committed to sustainable practices and being named first in the country for a highest-tier award is gratifying.

“As one of Asia’s leading financial institutions, we are actively leveraging technology, particularly AI, to drive the transition towards a low-carbon economy. This commitment extends to our data centre, where sustainable practices showcase our strategic foresight and operational excellence. We have conducted comprehensive studies and implemented key initiatives to improve energy efficiency. Notably, our AI-driven system optimises airflow and cooling by dynamically adjusting air pressure based on operational patterns, ensuring optimal performance while reducing energy consumption,” she said.

Another major initiative is the integration of renewable energy sources to power parts of the data centre. This move reflects OCBC Bank’s commitment to leveraging natural resources in its transition toward a low-carbon future.

In March 2024, the OCBC Cyberjaya Data Centre was nominated by GCI alongside 47 other facilities nationwide across 16 categories for the Best Green Data Centre in the large enterprise category by Green Climate Initiative (GCI) at the Malaysia Industry Government for High Technology (MIGHT) Award 2024. These nominations further reinforce our ongoing commitment to implementing meaningful and scalable sustainability initiatives throughout our operations.

In 2023 it was named Malaysia’s first megawatt-level facility to be awarded the Titanium Plus Tier, which was the highest certification at that time.
