Through the efforts of the OCBC Bukit Mertajam branch staff, more than 2,033 students - and teachers - from SMJK Chung Ling Butterworth received food waste processing equipment worth RM20,000 donated by the Bank. The equipment, comprising a composting machine and food waste shredder, will help to ensure the school’s food waste is recycled and turned into fertiliser to nourish the school’s garden. The excess fertiliser will be sold to the community to generate income for the school. This will also benefit the students in honing their entrepreneurial skills as well. The exercise is part of JCI Butterworth City’s Go Green Campus project focusing on educating students and teachers to understand the importance of recycling to better equip the future generation, aligned to supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To spur on the students’ creativity and innovativeness, a workshop was held for them, challenging them to invent a prototype using recyclable materials! And to cap things off, the staff prepared motivational notes to encourage the students along their journey.
